Whether its UCAT prep, personal statement writing or work experience, there’s something out there. This guide is aimed at widening participation students, but even if you don’t fall into this category, you can still access many of these resources.

Gaining work experience provides firsthand exposure to the healthcare environment and not only enhance applications by demonstrating commitment and understanding of the profession but also help develop critical skills such as communication, empathy, and teamwork. Volunteering is crucial in a medical school application as it showcases your commitment to healthcare, empathy, and real-world experience. I’ve linked plenty of opportunities you can sign up to!

Summer Schools 🏫

Summer schools are a great opportunity to experience life as a medical student at different universities and gain help with your application. These happen during the summer between Y12 and Y13, and applications will be during Y12.

UCAT

The UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is an exam required for admission to many medical and dental schools in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. It evaluates skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and empathy. You MUST take it in the summer before you submit your application to university. Find more information about this exam here.

UCAT Bursary

You typically have to pay for the UCAT, BUT for widening access students, this is completely FREE. Please don’t miss out on this opportunity if you are eligible. Check eligibility and to apply for a bursary voucher which covers the cost of the exam ***here.***

The official UCAT website themselves have some practise questions and mocks you and do for free. I would save these mocks to do closer towards your exam date, as it’ll be most like the real thing. Find those questions and mocks here.

Medify

Medify is a subscription-based UCAT prep tool, with thousands of questions and resources to help you ace the UCAT (I used them, and got top decile so I really recommend it!!). If you’re a widening access student, you can apply for their bursary which will give you free access to the site ***here.***

Medentry

Medentry is another UCAT prep too, who have some free resources and a free mock for all students to try out. Check them out here. To get full access to their question banks, again, this is a subscription based service but they offer 50% off for widening access students when you complete this form.
